What are Implant Dentures?

Implant dentures in Woodbridge are similar to dentures in their functionality, but with one key difference. Instead of resting on top of the gums directly like traditional dentures do, implant dentures attach to a series of dental implants that are placed throughout the mouth. That means the dental implants need to be surgically placed before the custom denture is attached. The result is a prosthetic that is more stable, longer-lasting, and easier to speak, eat, and smile with.

If you choose implant dentures to replace teeth, you’ll have two options to pick from. They include:

--Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures are not meant to be removed by anyone other than the dentist who attached it in the first place. That means you’ll also need anywhere between 4 and 6 implants to keep it sturdy. Patients will also need more bone density in most cases.

--Removable Implant Dentures

If an implant denture is removable, that means it can be taken out by the patient for cleaning and practicing oral hygiene. It also requires fewer implants (between 2 and 5) and is a more ideal option for those with less jawbone density.

The Implant Denture Procedure

During your initial consultation, you’ll sit down with Dr. Aquino to complete your exam and confirm your eligibility for dental implants. If he believes you are able to receive them (or at the very least will be able to do so after completing preparatory treatments first), he’ll start planning your surgery and take the steps to create your new implant denture.

During surgery, small incisions are made in your gum tissue and tiny holes are created for the implants to sit. From there, the implants are placed and the gums are stitched shut so they can begin to integrate. Once fully integrated, you’ll come back to our office to have the implant denture fitted.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

If you are wondering if dental implant dentures are right for you, consider the following ahead of your consultation:

  • Assess your overall health: you should get permission from your general practitioner before completing minor surgery
  • Assess your oral health: tooth decay, gum disease, and any other dental concerns will need to be addressed ahead of any oral surgery
  • Be committed to an extended treatment process: replacing teeth in this way takes several months to complete
  • Remain dedicated to strict oral hygiene: dental implants are durable and hold a high success rate, but only if you’re willing to take good care of them
